26th May 2012 - Safeguarding Children Event for Faith and Voluntary Organisations

On 26th May, Coventry and Warwickshire Safeguarding Children Boards held their third safeguarding event for Faith Groups and Religious Organisations. The event also included staff from the Voluntary and Community Sector. Sessions were delivered by Claudia Bell, Churches Child Protection Advisory Service and Rebecca Edwards, Safe Network. Vic Jones, Warwickshire Community and Voluntary Youth Services also contributed. Topics covered were signs and symptoms of abuse and how to respond, safer recruitment and policies and procedures. The event was attended by nearly 50 delegates.

The event coincided with the visit to Coventry of the Archbishop of Canterbury who was celebrating the 50th anniversary of the city's cathedral. In recognition of the safeguarding event, Archbishop Rowan Williams sent a message of welcome and support to all those attending. In his statement he emphasised the importance of doing all that can be done to keep children safe and feeling safe. He also acknowledged the role which all religious organisations and voluntary sector groups play in achieving this objective. (see attached for full message).
